SoftKinetic And Melexis First To Bring 3D Vision To Automobile Infotainment

3D Vision Enables Driver Monitoring as well as Gesture Recognition to Control Media

BRUSSELS, June 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- SoftKinetic®, the world's leading provider of 3D vision and gesture recognition solutions, together with global automotive semiconductor and sensor innovator Melexis (MELE), today announce the availability of the first Time of Flight (ToF) 3D sensor for automobile safety and infotainment markets. The MLX75023 sensor, featuring SoftKinetic technology and manufactured in Melexis' automotive-grade CMOS mixed signal process, is the highest resolution 3D sensor available. It works in full sunlight, making it the perfect solution for a vehicle's cockpit. It can be used for natural 3D gesture recognition and robust driver monitoring, bringing a new level of infotainment navigation control and safety features. Both companies will be demonstrating the new sensor at the CAR HMi event June 26-27, 2014 in Berlin.

The MLX75023 is a QVGA (320 x 240 pixel) resolution optical ToF camera sensor. Featuring SoftKinetic's patented DepthSense® 3D Imaging technology, and in conjunction with SoftKinetic's advanced image processing software, the sensor is capable of understanding the most subtle human gestures as well as the shape, size and behavior of objects and people inside the car. Now drivers can adjust the temperature and radio, or make a phone call, using simple gestures and without taking their eyes off the road. Additional capabilities of the sensor allow for driver behavior monitoring as well as context awareness, creating a safer environment for every passenger in the vehicle.

"Our unique Time of Flight sensor has created exciting opportunities for the gaming environment, augmented and virtual realities, and even the living room. Working together with Melexis we have now been able to create a sensor that is robust in full sunlight, perfect for the automobile environment," said Michel Tombroff, CEO of SoftKinetic. "We are excited about the multitude of possibilities with this sensor, and look forward to the ways car manufacturers will incorporate it into the design of their vehicles' cockpits and beyond."
"At Melexis, we pride ourselves on bringing the most innovative and technically-advanced sensors and semiconductor systems to the highly competitive automobile manufacturing environment. SoftKinetic was an excellent fit for us, as their unique ToF sensor was unsurpassed in capabilities and function," said Françoise Chombar, CEO at Melexis. Subaru Releases Video Of Isle Of Man TT Course Record Lap In The New 2015 WRX STI

CHERRY HILL, N.J., June 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Subaru of America, Inc. has released the first video from its record setting lap of the Isle of Man TT Course. Mark Higgins broke the lap record two weeks ago driving a new 2015 Subaru WRX STI on the treacherous 37-mile course with an average lap speed of 117.510 MPH and a time of 19 minutes and 15 seconds.

This new lap record breaks the previous record of 115.36 MPH that was set in 2011 in a 2011 WRX STI. The run was completed in a U.S.-spec 2015 Subaru WRX STI.

"Watching the new video provides an insight into what it is like to drive this course flat out," said Mark Higgins. "The build up to the lap is very intense and it is a fight the whole way around. I learn more every lap I take. The final run I was able to do a much cleaner lap. Just an amazing experience and I hope everyone enjoys the video."

The video can be found on Subaru of America's YouTube channel at http://youtu.be/scHb4TD5160. A new video will be released June 25th showing a full, unedited in-car driver point of view of the entire record lap with commentary.

The car Higgins drove is a stock U.S.-spec 2015 WRX STI, with the exception of an FIA-spec roll-cage, racing seat and harness, fire suppression system and modified springs and dampers to handle the sustained high speeds and changing conditions of the course. The Subaru WRX STI also featured Dunlop Direzza tires and a high decibel straight exhaust for crowd safety. The speed limiter was also removed from the car.
The event, which has been comprehensively risk assessed by both Subaru and the ACU, including consultation with all relevant parties, took place under full, closed road race conditions.
In his previous attempt on the course, Higgins created one of the most memorable race videos when he had a self-described "moment" at the bottom of Bray Hill at 150 MPH. The video has received almost 4 million views.  After setting the record Higgins stated, "Setting the record was both the most exhilarating and the most frightening thing I have ever done."
